The May Loot crate box has an item from a franchise you’d definitely expect, given the theme, plus some surprises.

Sometimes things just work out perfectly for a Loot Crate theme. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 came out earlier this month, kicking off the 2017 summer movie season in earnest (because yeah, the summer for movies starts in early May and is mostly done by August). The May crate theme happens to be Guardians. Serendipity — except not since it was almost certainly planned.

Of course Marvel’s Guardians only appear on one item in this month’s box, but there are plenty of other kinds of Guardians around pop culture. Let’s crack this puppy open and see what the rest of them are.

Loot Crate May 2017 unboxing: Guardians

The first thing that struck us about the May crate is that the box itself seems like it has a more elaborate purpose than most.Ā It looked like you could punch out multiple parts of it to assemble something, which turned out to be correct.

Inside, things looked a little sparse, but as Yoda (who is not in this box) might say, judge these items by their size, do you? And well you should not. Yeah, he’d totally say that.

Timed Exclusive Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 Rocket & Groot Q-Fig

Loot Crate loves its Q-Figs, and that’s just fine with us. These collectibles give you some of the same shelf-enhancing effect of statues or busts at a much more wallet-friendly price.

As noted in this month’s in-crate magazine, what really makes this Q-Fig shine are the little details. The expressions for both Rocket and Groot are great, as is the smoke coming out of the barrel of one of Rocket’s guns. If you love these characters — and by now, most everyone does — you’ll enjoy this.

Exclusive The Goonies T-Shirt

What are the Goonies the Guardians of? Why, their homes and neighborhood, of course. Tough to argue that they didn’t give their all in a successful and entertaining defense.

In any case, this is a fantastic shirt and the kind of unexpected but pleasant surprise that Loot Crate does so well. It’s also the kind of item that people who aren’t necessarily into typical ā€œgenreā€ stuff might enjoy, and in fact, this writer’s wife claimed it for herself shortly after seeing it.

Loot Crate Edition Star Wars Adult Coloring Book and Colored Pencils

Exactly what it sounds like, it’s an adult coloring book with 30 pages of Star Wars goodness. The kicker is the box of six colored pencils with a built-in sharpener so you don’t need anything else to get to coloring. The cover featuring everyone’s favorite droids is also exclusive to Loot Crate.

Exclusive Destiny Patches

Perhaps the most obviously niche items in this month’s crate, these are three class patches from Destiny, suitable for ironing or sewing onto clothes or a bag. They’re also nicely displayed as is, so even if the game isn’t your thing, you can give them to a friend who enjoys Destiny without just handing them three loose patches.

Free Digital Comics

There’s no physical comic in this box, which is kind of a bummer, but it does come with codes for Rocket Raccoon #1 and Groot #1 from Marvel. They make for kind of a fitting bow on the whole package for the month, though please don’t tell Rocket we said that.

This Month’s Pin

The exclusive Avatar (the Nickelodeon animated series, not James Cameron’s ode to 3D) pin found in this crate has a cool special feature: it glows in the dark, a Loot Crate first.

Value Proposition

Again, this May shipment may not have the visual wow factor of some others when you first pop open the box, but the value was excellent as always. Estimating a retail price of $15 for the Q-Fig and $5-6 for the Star Wars adult coloring book and you’ve already got your purchase price, even with shipping and handling, with the shirt, patches and digital comics easily doubling it.

Not every Loot Crate theme will fit as snugly with a new movie release as this one, but considering we’re now officially in summer blockbuster territory for the next few months, you can guess the June and July crates might too. That’s definitely something to anticipate as the weather gets hotter.

Disclosure: FanSided was provided with a free MayĀ 2017Ā Loot Crate box for the purposes of this review.
