The absurdity of Magikarp getting its own mobile game is actually one of the best parts about it, and we tell you how to enjoy it to the fullest.

With a ton of Pokemon from which to choose, both classic and new, Magikarp would be among the last of the pocket monsters to pick as the star of its own video game. Yes, it kind of has a cult folllowing, but it’s not much use in a fight. Happily, Pokemon: Magikarp Jump doesn’t ask it to do any battling.

In fact, the game really just wants you to help Magikarp do what they do best (and possibly the only thing they do, full stop): jump. How high? Real high, as Kriss Kross once told us.

You don’t even have to do anything to get them to jump in competition, as Pokemon: Magikarp Jump is a pretty simple game. That doesn’t mean it can’t be enjoyed even more with a little guidance, though, which is why we put together these Magikarp Jump tips, hints and strategies to help you literally vault your way to the top.

The care and feeding of Magikarp

Getting Magikarp to jump higher is a two-step process, and it starts with a good diet. When Magikarp is in its pond, you can feed it simply by tapping or swiping on the berries floating around underwater. Each one gives the fish Pokemon some more JP (that stands for Jump Power) and gets it closer to leveling up. If the berries are all gone, simply waiting around will allow them to replenish.

You can increase the effectiveness of each berry by heading to Town and tapping on the ‘Food’ button. From there, you can spend coins you earn in competition to make each type of food better for Magikarp.
