Stephen A. Smith has been wrong about every NBA Finals since 2011
Stephen A. Smith’s prediction for the NBA Finals has been wrong each time since 2011.
Stephen A. Smith is paid millions of dollars a year by ESPN to be one of their most vocal basketball analysts. One would expect with his salary, which exceeds $3 million a year, he would be right about the NBA Finals most of the time. Over time, the average person can expect to be right 50 percent of the time if they decide by flipping a coin. However, Smith has been wrong about the NBA Finals each year since 2011.
In 2011, he thought the Miami Heat would win. Apparently the Dallas Mavericks didn’t get that memo, beating them in six games. The next year, Smith guaranteed the Oklahoma City Thunder would beat the Heat. However, Miami won in five games. Smith didn’t learn his lesson in 2013, predicting the San Antonio Spurs would be the Heat. Thanks to Ray Allen, Miami made him look bad, beating them in seven games.
Smith learned his lesson betting against the Heat, predicting them to beat the Spurs in 2014. But San Antonio won in five games. In 2015, Smith picked LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers to win the title over Golden State Warriors. The latter won in six games. Naturally, Smith (as many analysts did) went with the Warriors in 2016. However, the Cavaliers overcame a 3-1 deficit to win their first NBA title.

It’s almost impressive how wrong Smith has been recently. One would expect he’d correctly predict at least one of the past six NBA Finals, but this isn’t the case. If you’re a Warriors or Cavaliers fan, you should be rooting for Smith to pick against your team. Be very afraid if he thinks your team will win. Because the curse of Stephen A. Smith is a real thing.
