24. PeeDee the Pirate

On stranger tides, PeeDee the Pirate has become a local icon for East Carolina University. When it comes to mascots, the pirate is very hard to outdo. Whether it’s the Tampa Bay Buccaneers or East Carolina University, it’s simple yet effective.

However, just like any walking reincarnation of Johnny Depp on the set of one of his films, it’s downright goofy to say the last. PeeDee has a name that fits the criteria for that alone and that bumps him up on this list.

In the land of swashbuckling and searching for buried treasure, it’s only the most clever and tough that survive. That might be a load of barnacles to some, but to PeeDee the Pirate it’s just the daily life of navigating the waters of campus life.

It’s a tall task for mascots of smaller schools to stand up and go sword-to-sword with the mascots of larger schools. Somehow, this ship captain has gone above and beyond to make a name for him and his crew.

So x or No. 23 marks the spot for him on this list. This is the spot among the goofiest mascots where PeeDee drops anchor. Pirate puns are great and there should be more mascots of that ilk in the NCAA.
