The Pittsburgh Penguins and Nashville Predators meet in Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Final, and here’s all the info you need to watch.
The Stanley Cup Finals begin on Monday night when the defending champions, the Pittsburgh Penguins, host the Nashville Predators. The Penguins look to become the first team to win back to back Stanley Cups since the 1997-98 Detroit Red Wings. Pittsburgh is the first team to reach back to back finals since the Red Wings and Penguins split Stanley Cups in 2008-09. This is the first Stanley Cup appearance for the Predators since entering the NHL in 1998.
The Penguins advanced to the Stanley Cup Finals after eliminating Ottawa in double overtime in Game 7. As expected, the Penguins have been led by centers Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin. The duo has combined for 44 points in the playoffs. Winger Phil Kessel has added 19 points for Pittsburgh including four power play goals. The Penguins’ decision to switch goalies has paid off so far. In five games, Matt Murray has allowed only seven goals and has a 94.6 save percentage.
Nashville entered the playoffs as the lowest seed but has advanced to the Stanley Cup Finals thanks to the incredible play of goalie Pekka Rinne and the Predators’ defense. In 16 playoff games, the Predators have only allowed 29 goals. Rinne has posted a 94.1 save percentage, while the Predators top four defensemen have added 39 points. Head coach Peter Laviolette will have to decide if he wants P.K. Subban and Mattias Ekholm to face the Crosby line or the Malkin line, while Ryan Ellis and Roman Josi will face the other line. The Predators are also getting some help for Game 1, as captain Mike Fisher and Craig Smith are both expected to play in the series opener.
