The Red Sox will place second baseman Dustin Pedroia on the disabled list via a severe sprained wrist.

Dustin Pedroia took a tumble in the first inning of the Red Sox 5-4 loss to the Chicago White Sox Monday afternoon. Pedroia collided with White Sox first baseman Jose Abreu in an eventual ground out. Unfortunately for Boston, his fall will cost it Pedroia for two weeks or so.

Peter Abraham of the Boston Globe first reported the news on Pedroia’s trip to the disabled list.

In a corresponding move, Pablo Sandoval is expected to be activated from his rehab assignment in Triple-A. With Pedroia on the shelf, Deven Marrero and Josh Rutledge will likely share the second base duties. Those responsibilities would have likely gone to either Marco Hernandez or Brock Holt but both players are in danger of missing the season because of different reasons.

Pedroia, 33, was off to a productive start to the 2017 season. His batting line of .292/.369/.380 over the course of 197 plate appearances fall in line closely to his career batting numbers. Pedroia has always been a defensive stalwart in Boston as well winning the gold glove four times during his 12-year career. The hope for the Red Sox is that Pedey can return to the lineup card in roughly two weeks.

The Red Sox have been bitten by the injury bug quite a bit in 2017. David Price made his first start yesterday after almost missing the season due to an elbow scare. The team’s top two setup men Tyler Thornburg and Carson Smith also haven’t made appearances for the Red Sox in 2017. This doesn’t even include Steven Wright undergoing season-ending surgery. The biggest uphill climb for Boston will be finding a reliable third base option for the rest of the year.
