MLB trade rumors: Red Sox getting ready?
By Trey Daubert
Red Sox President of Baseball Operations Dave Dombrowski states the Red Sox aren’t in ready to make a trade just yet.
The Red Sox are coming? Well, maybe not yet. Dave Dombrowski runs the show in Boston and has the reputation for pushing his chips in the middle of the table when the time is right to make a deal. As the month of May is set to conclude, Dombrowski is simply in the process of ‘gathering information’.
In a recent interview with Evan Drellich of CSN New England, Dombrowski isn’t ready to pull the trigger on a trade just yet.
"“Not really,” he said via Evan Drellich. “I think it’s more of a situation where you’re talking to clubs, you have a pulse of what’s going on — not always necessarily me, but being in a position where some of our scouts are out there talking. Right now, it’s more of an information-gathering time period. People want to stay in this thing if they can. They’re more in a situation where they’re trying to do that."
We all know that Trader Dave will be lurking in the rumor mill sometime soon. Dombrowski has the track record of not being afraid to deal his most coveted prospects. Sometimes they work out as evidence by Chris Sale’s dominant start to his 2017 season. Others haven’t such as the egregious Drew Pomeranz trade by giving away Anderson Espinoza.
Boston’s farm system has gotten pretty barren all of the sudden with Rafael Devers and Jason Groome being the lone top 100 prospects in the system. Only time will tell if Dombrowski is ready to give up even more talented prospects.
"“The handful of clubs where you can make trades, you could have figured those out a month ago… because they’re building for the future. Other than that, most of the other clubs are trying to hold where they are to see how long they can be in that spot. I don’t think it’s a real heavy trade talk time period. It’s not to say something can’t happen at any time out of the blue, but I don’t think it’s that time period.”"

One position of need for the Red Sox is third base. This problem could have simply been solved if Dombrowski had just kept Travis Shaw instead of dealing him for Tyler Thornburg. This trade, in particular, hasn’t worked out since Thornburg has spent the season on the DL.
With David Price returning from injury, fixing third base remains the priority in Boston. Maybe that answer is Rafael Devers who’s premature call-up may be inevitable. Boston’s infield depth has been bitten by the injury bug as Dustin Pedroia was recently placed on the DL to make matters worse.
