Day 4 of the 2017 French Open is in the books. Let’s take a look at how the first day of round two of the women’s singles shook out at Roland Garros.

The fourth day of the 2017 French Open at Stade Roland Garros was terrific. While the men’s singles tournament has been mostly chalk, the women’s singles tournament looks to be the more interesting of the two through the first four days of the open.

While last year’s winner No. 4 Garbine Muguruza advanced to the round of 32 by defeating Anett Kontaveit, 6(4)-7(7), 6-4, 6-2, we did see three ranked players fall on Wednesday, including No. 6 Dominika Cibulkova.

Cibulkova just did not have it today, falling to Ons Jabeur in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3. What the women’s singles tournament is trying to tell us is that without Serena Williams playing in it, pretty much anybody can win it. Williams is in Paris cheering on her older sister Venus Williams, who won on Wednesday over Kurumi Nara, 6-3, 6-1.

While it would be really cool if Venus wins another singles major with her pregnant superstar sister in attendance, it’s not all that feasible with the elder Williams sister being the No. 10 seed in the tournament.

However, solid players like Cibulkova and top-seeded Angelique Kerber have fallen in the first few days. Underdogs are making their presence felt in the 2017 French Open on the women’s side of the bracket. Could Muguruza end up winning her second straight major at Roland Garros?

Here are the results of the day four action in the women’s singles tournament on Wednesday.

Will upsets be a thing throughout the women’s tournament? We’ll just have to wait and find out as action from Stade Roland Garros will run throughout the next week plus. Clay is a finicky playing surface, so really anything could happen in the 2017 French Open.
