Top 25 NFL mustaches of all time
By John Buhler
9. Walter Payton
Of course, an all-time running back has an all-time ‘stache! Walter Payton was sensational and are we not sure that his signature mustache was not the inspiration for his nickname Sweetness? That mustache was more 1980s before sell-out Eddie Murphy. He, he, he!
Payton’s signature facial follicles never overpowered his wonderful face. It was smooth like his running style, eventually tapering off into two curtain-like structures at the corner of his mouth. What made this ‘stache so magnificent is that throughly accentuated his emotions.
When Payton was happy that the Chicago Bears weren’t losing, the grin he’d put out there for the world was all sorts of charming. If the Bears were stinking it up even after he ran for 200 yards in loss, you could feel his frustrating leer penetrate your soul to just do better, man.
We lost him way too early at the age of 45 in 1999 to liver disease. The late Payton has two awards named after him: the Walter Payton Award, which is handed out to the best FCS player in college football and the Walter Payton Man of the Year Award, given annually to the best dude on and off the field in the NFL.
