Top 25 NFL mustaches of all time
By John Buhler
7. Mike Ditka
At one time, there was a dude in Chicago that was more important than Michael Jordan. No, we ain’t talking ’bout practice and certainly not talking about David Ross. You have to win Dancing With the Stars to be in that conversation, celebrated backup backstop. We’re obviously talking about Mike Ditka. What a ‘stache!
Ditka may have had his roots in Western Pennsylvania, but he did his best football things in the Windy City for Da Bears. Ditka helped pioneer the tight end into NFL passing games a Hall of Fame player for Chicago. He also coached the greatest single-season team in NFL history in the 1985 Bears.
Along with Tom Landry’s hat, Ditka’s navy Bears sweater and scrumtrulescent mustache combination is a more impenetrable image than even the Be Like Mike Nike shoes campaign for Jordan. The amount of dumb dads that wore sweaters, grew mustaches and rocked a pair of aviators just to magically convince themselves that they knew what they were doing as coaches is jaw-dropping.
When he wasn’t hitting the snooze button located somewhere on his ‘stache during live television broadcasts in ESPN, Ditka was the best assistant coach/neighbor to Will Ferrell’s character in Kicking and Screaming. Lions, Tigers, Da Bears and Ditka. Oh my!
