Miami Heat doctors rule Chris Bosh’s illness to be career-ending, thus allowing the Heat to free up some salary cap space.

The news that came back for Chris Bosh was as bad as expected. Looks like the illness that kept him out during the 2016-17 NBA season will end his time in Miami and threaten his career in the NBA.

Due to blood clots from the 2015-16 season, combined with a poor prior medical history, Miami Heat doctors have ruled Bosh’s illness to be career-ending.

This has a huge effect on both Bosh and the Miami Heat. Reportedly, the two parties have reached an agreement in which Bosh can be released from the Heat and there will be no effect on Miami’s salary cap. The power forward will still receive the salary that he was due, but it won’t have future implications on Miami’s roster construction.

It seems as if Bosh is still interested in returning to the NBA, but in order to do so, he will have to provide evidence to the NBA that he is fully healthy and capable of playing again.

For the Miami Heat, they are suddenly off the hook for Bosh’s salary, in terms of the cap. Chris Bosh signed a 5 year, $118 million deal back in the Summer of 2014, after LeBron James took his talents back to Cleveland.

Bosh was due $25 million against the salary cap the next two seasons. Now Pat Riley and Mickey Arison will have that money to spend on other free agents.

The Heat finished in the No. 9 seed and had a chance to get into the NBA Playoffs on the last day of the regular season. With an extra $25 million to spend these next few years, the Heat will be able to add key pieces to help them compete for a spot in the playoffs.

On the Bosh front, it seems as if he’s moving back to Los Angeles and will determine what to do with his career from there. Hopefully, he’ll be back in an NBA uniform, healthy and competing. But it won’t be for the Miami Heat.
