Dennis Pitta injury update: Career in jeopardy
Baltimore Ravens tight end Dennis Pitta’s career could be in jeopardy after a scary hip injury in practice.
The Baltimore Ravens have suffered a lot of injuries over the past two years. It seems their luck isn’t getting any better in 2017. Just when they thought Dennis Pitta was healthy again, he suffered a hip injury in practice. And it gets worse. According to Adam Schefter, the fear is Pitta might have to retire.
He’s already had two terrible hip injuries. Many thought Pitta wouldn’t play again after his second hip dislocation. However, he fought back and wound up being the Ravens’ leader in receptions in 2016 with 86 catches. Obviously, losing Pitta would be a huge loss for Baltimore, who has already lost Steve Smith Sr. due to retirement and Kamar Aiken due to free agency.
Maxx Williams and Ben Watson would have to step up if they lose their top tight end. The former is a second round pick who had 32 receptions in 2015. However, he’s coming off a season ending injury in October and got minimal snaps even before his season ended. Watson is coming off an Achilles’ tendon injury back in the 2016 preseason. He’s a veteran who has proven he can be a productive option. However, Watson’s health is an obvious question mark.
The Ravens would be losing one of quarterback Joe Flacco’s favorite targets if Pitta misses any playing time. Danny Woodhead could help ease the burden, as he’s a very effective receiver out of the backfield. However, like the other options, his health is a concern.

This is a tough break for Baltimore. Especially since it comes just a day after Tavon Young tore his ACL during practice. It could be another rough season for the Ravens, and one with consequences for the coaching staff and front office.
