By John Buhler
Day 6 of the 2017 French Open is in the books at Stade Roland Garros. Let’s take a look at the results from the men’s singles tournament on Friday, June 2.
Day 6 of the 2017 French Open at Stade Roland Garros has come to a close. The men’s singles tournament is very much in the third round. Friday, June 2 saw top players like No. 2 Novak Djokovic and No. 4 Rafael Nadal advance to the fourth round.
While Nadal cruised past Nikoloz Basilashvili, 6-0, 6-1, 6-0, Djokovic had a tougher time in his third round match with Diego Schwartzman. The defending men’s singles champion Djokovic need five sets to beat Schwartzmen, but advanced, 5-7, 6-3, 3-6, 6-1, 6-1.
Again it was mostly chalk in the men’s singles tournament on Friday at Stade Roland Garros. However, there were three upsets on the day and two players that ultimately had to withdraw a bit early. No. 5 Milos Raonic continues to dazzle on clay, as he moved past Guillermo Garcia-Lopez 6-1, 1-0. Garcia-Lopez withdrew early in the second set down 1-0.
No. 20 Pablo Carreno Busta knocked off No. 11 Grigor Dimitrov in straight sets to advance to the fourth round. He would go 7-5, 6-3, 6-4. No. 19 Albert Ramos-Vinolas beat a slightly higher ranked player in No. 16 Lucas Pouille in five sets to conclude the men’s singles part of the tournament on Friday evening.
While Djokovic and Nadal advancing would be the biggest news of the day at Roland Garros on the men’s side, that’s not the case today. No. 10 David Goffin suffered a bad ankle injury in the first set. Despite being up 5-4 in the first set, he had to retire, which allowed Horacio Zeballos to advance.

Having both Djokovic and Nadal advancing to the latter stages of the mens’ tournament is huge, as both will play a big part in the second week at Roland Garros. That being said, the one guy to keep an eye on is Raonic. He’s been solid the whole tournament thus far. It wouldn’t be shocking to see him upset some bigger dogs on class in the coming days.
