NFL roundup: Jets trade away former first round pick Calvin Pryor
By Brad Weiss
After drafting two safeties in the first two rounds of the 2017 NFL Draft, the Jets felt Calvin Pryor was expendable, trading him to Cleveland on Thursday.
With their first round pick in the 2014 NFL Draft, the New York Jets selected Calvin Pryor, a good-looking safety out of Louisville. He has played decently for the team since then, but after drafting safeties in the first and second rounds this year, he was deemed expendable by the team. The Jets traded Pryor to the Cleveland Browns for Demario Davis on Thursday, bringing back the linebacker who spent his first four seasons with the team before leaving for Cleveland last offseason.
The Houston Texans traded up in the 2017 NFL Draft to select Deshaun Watson, who was fresh off a national title with the Clemson Tigers. Last season, the Texans spent big money to lure Brock Osweiler away from the Denver Broncos, but he has since been traded to the Browns. Watson has looked good so far with the Texans, and head coach Bill O’Brien said on Wednesday that he is “getting better everyday.”
Christine Michael scored eight touchdowns for the Green Bay Packers and Seattle Seahawks last season but still found himself without a job until Thursday. Michael signed with the Indianapolis Colts, where he will battle with fourth-round pick Marlon Mack for the top spot behind 34-year old Frank Gore. Michael is an explosive runner when healthy and should be a welcome addition for a team that desperately needed running back help.
Staying with the running backs, it looks like Matt Jones is officially fifth on the Washington Redskins depth chart. Last season, Jones was the starter heading into camp, but Rob Kelley stole the position when Jones was injured during the season. Kelley looks to be in better shape for the 2017 NFL season and may be trying to shake the nickname that fans have given to him, “Fat Rob.”

Finally, the Philadelphia Eagles signed their first round draft pick on Thursday. Derek Barnett, who broke former Eagles defensive lineman Reggie White’s career sack record during his time at Tennessee, signed his four-year rookie contract with the team. The No. 14 overall pick in the draft, Barnett was one of the more explosive prospects in the draft on the edge, and should add to a very good, very young team in the City of Brotherly Love.
