Edinson Volquez made history with a no-hitter on Saturday night, and was quick to dedicate to two of his good friends, Jose Fernandez and Yordano Ventura.

Edinson Volquez threw the sixth no-hitter in Miami Marlins franchise history on Saturday night in a 3-0 win, but the really special highlight came in the moments after he celebrated his accomplishment.

As if the no-hitter wasn’t enough to be emotional about, Volquez made sure to end the day with some happy thoughts for everyone watching at home, and put the focus on two former pitchers that he was close to.

Volquez pulled a very classy move in his postgame interview after his historic moment, and dedicated the game to former Marlins teammate Jose Fernandez, and former Kansas City Royals teammate Yordano Ventura. Both were former pitchers in the MLB, and both passed away in tragic accidents in the last calendar year.

Hernandez died in a boating accident last September, while Ventura passed away in January in a car crash in the Dominican Republic. Volquez, with cream wiped away from his eyes from his teammates’ celebration, took time away from his interview to pay tribute to his fallen friends.

The no-hitter came on the same day as what would’ve been Ventura’s 26th birthday, adding to the already-special moment for the Marlins right-hander. Just hours before his start on Saturday against the Arizona Diamondbacks, Volquez paid tribute to Ventura on Instagram with a birthday post.

Before Saturday, Volquez had only thrown a one-hitter back in 2012 while he was playing for the San Diego Padres, but apparently had all the motivation he needed to pull off the no-no in his most recent start.

The no-hitter was the league’s first of this year’s regular season, and it couldn’t have come on a more important day for the Marlins starter. For a starter who didn’t get past the sixth inning in his last four starts, he surely got a boost from his friends during his historic occasion.
