Miami Marlins right-hander Edinson Volquez threw a no-hitter against the Arizona Diamondbacks on Saturday afternoon.

It got a little tense in the end, especially in a 1-0 game for most of the afternoon, but Miami Marlins pitcher Edinson Volquez finished it off and completed a no-hitter on Saturday against the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Volquez, who was a shade over 60 pitches through six innings on Saturday, walked two and those two were the only baserunners he allowed on the day for Major League Baseball’s first no-no of the young season and the first since April of last season.

Through the first seven innings, Volquez was in complete control. He struck out six hitters, walked only one against one of the better lineups in the National League. Coming into Saturday, only four teams had scored more than Arizona’s 278 total runs this season and only the Washington Nationals had hit more home runs than the Diamondbacks and their 82 long balls this season.

Justin Bour’s fourth-inning RBI single to score Home Run Derby champion Giancarlo Stanton was all the support Volquez needed on Saturday, who was coming off a three-hit victory over six innings in his last outing on Monday against the Philadelphia Phillies. But, the Marlins tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the eighth just for good measure.

Before his no-no, Volquez had gone exactly six innings in his previous four outings. The closest Volquez had ever come to a no-no in his pro career was when he threw a one-hitter for the San Diego Padres back in 2012 against the Houston Astros.

Volquez’s no-hitter was the first no-hitter in a 3-0 game since Mike Fiers threw a no-no against the Los Angeles Dodgers back in August 2015 and third 3-0 no-hitter in the last seven no-hitters thrown in MLB. It was also the sixth no-hitter in Marlins history.

No pitcher had thrown a no-hitter in MLB since Jake Arrieta’s no-no in April 2016 in a 16-0 beatdown of the Cincinnati Reds for the Chicago Cubs during their World Series-winning season last year.
