Jonathan Toews comments on climate change
Chicago Blackhawks star Jonathan Toews got on Instagram to share his views on climate change.
The climate change and global warming debates have gone on for many years. There are two sides to the issues. It’s rare to see NHL players comment on social issues. However, Chicago Blackhawks captain Jonathan Toews broke tradition by giving his thoughts on an Instagram post.
Toews gives a thought provoking statement, no matter which side of the argument you’re on. This isn’t the first time the Blackhawks captain has used social media to express his opinion on something. Toews is also a fan of growing produce and other products naturally.
Whether or not you agree with him, his willingness to discuss an issue he’s passionate about is admirable. The NHL needs more of it. Take a look at the NBA. They aren’t afraid to use Twitter and Instagram to promote their players. NBA commissioner Adam Silver realizes it’s a necessary, and possibly even useful, evil. Players are encouraged to share hints of their personal lives, whether it’s sharing their favorite music, movies, cars or opinions on social issues. This helps fans feel much more engaged with the athletes.
Few hockey players are willing to be vocal about what they’re passionate about. Alex Ovechkin of the Washington Capitals and several other players have expressed a desire to play in the 2018 Olympics. Even though they might disagree with the league’s official stance, their passion gives fans a chance to engage with them and relate with them.

Toews is one of the more vocal players. While he certainly isn’t as vocal as someone like LeBron James or Carmelo Anthony, he should be applauded. Because whether you agree or disagree with Toews, it’s fun to see athletes use their unique positions to be influencers off the ice.
