Some late drama from none other than Sergio Ramos earns Juan Cuadrado his second yellow, getting him sent off.

Felix Brych, today’s referee in the Champions League final, was feeling very trigger happy with issuing cards. He issued eight total cards, with one being a second yellow. While for most of the match Brych called it properly and seemingly had some control over everything, he had a complete meltdown with this call.

With Real Madrid leading 3-1, Sergio Ramos slid in for a clean, but rather strong, challenge on substitute Juan Cuadrado. The tackle sent Cuadrado into the air, which rubbed the ex-Chelsea man the wrong way. Ramos, known for his incredible defensive abilities, as well as his on-field antics, had Cuadrado right where he wanted him.

After getting up from the tackle, Cuadrado was walking to the sideline to retrieve the ball that went out of play. As he passed Ramos, he gave him a slight push on the shoulder and, well … Ramos did what he does best. Ramos fell to the ground in agony, rolling around gripping his foot of all things.

While there may have been a slight touch to his foot as Cuadrado passed, it was not nearly enough for the display Ramos delivered. Ramos may be good enough to be on Broadway for how well he sold that.

Ultimately it didn’t impact the final score, as Real Madrid went on to win 4-1, but it was unnecessary. Although the referee could have given the yellow to Ramos for embellishment, which would have seen Ramos be sent off. Had that been the case, Juventus may have had a shot at a comeback.

It is truly horrendous that such a bad call could be made on such a big stage. There was absolutely no reason for a yellow to be given there. But mistakes are made, and Ramos took full advantage of the situation.
