Wonder Woman is obviously a triumphant tale, but not everyone makes it out alive — so, who dies in the film?
SPOILER WARNING: If you’ve not yet seen Wonder Woman and don’t want it spoiled, just turn around (figuratively speaking) right now.
Not that it was a particularly difficult feat, but Wonder Woman is by far the best film yet in the DC Extended Universe. Gal Gadot delivers a marvelous performance in the lead. What’s more, Chris Pine is phenomenal as Captain Steve Trevor. And it’s all pulled together by a fantastic story that gives everyone a wonderful idea of Wonder Woman and her ultimate purpose.
While the end result of Wonder Woman is ultimately fulfilling, though, it’s not all happy. There are several exceptionally heavy moments throughout the film. And unfortunately, not everyone makes it out of the movie alive. So then, that begs the question of who dies in Wonder Woman.
Obviously there are numerous deaths in a movie set in the gruesome World War I. However, we’re only going to focus on the three main deaths in the film. The first of those is that of General Antiope, who is the aunt of Diana (Wonder Woman) and leader of the Amazon army. When Steve’s plane crashes in Themyscira, German soldiers follow him in and attack the Amazons. To save Diana, Antiope dives in front of a bullet and is fatally wounded.
After that, though, we are spared any major deaths until the end of the film. The first of those is triumphant as the villain of the film, Ares (David Thewlis), is killed at the hands of Wonder Woman herself to end the war. However, the other major death is much more devastating.
To help save the world from Doctor Poison’s new weapon, Captain Steve Trevor drives the plane filled with the gas far enough away from Earth to save everyone. He then sacrifices himself by blowing it all up in the plane that he’s piloting. Words truly don’t do the tragedy of the scene justice.

Those are obviously major deaths, but thankfully that’s where they end for Wonder Woman. In terms of judging the movie, though, each death is meaningful. They all serve a purpose and all help move things forward and convey the general themes. Considering what the DCEU has given us before, that at least is refreshing.
