Yankees flex offensive muscles with four home runs in one inning against Blue Jays.

Throughout the last few weeks, the New York Yankees have been flying under the radar. The AL-East leaders have stepped back into the shadows as the media has focused on the success of the Houston Astros. Obviously, the Astros are the MLB’s best offensive team thus far. But, don’t sleep on the Yankees.

The Bronx Bombers have lived up to their nickname in recent weeks, flexing their offensive muscles and scoring runs in every way possible. During the eighth inning of their game with the Blue Jays, New York took a commanding lead, courtesy of four solo shots.

Brett Gardner led the inning off with his 12th homer of the year, launching it into the right-field pen. Blue Jays pitcher Jason Grilli quickly retired Aaron Hicks (line out to left) and Aaron Judge (strikeout looking), but then the Yankees did the unthinkable. Matt Holliday stepped in and drove a 1-0 pitch to deep left center, giving the Yankees a 5-0 lead. Following Holliday, both Starlin Castro and Didi Gregorius took their respective 3-2 pitches deep.

The back-to-back-to-back home runs capped off a four-run eighth inning and secured a 7-0 victory for New York on the road. Gardner and Holliday’s homer totals rose to 12 each, with Castro trailing close behind at nine, Gregorious hit his fourth. The Yankees hit four home runs in total, an unintentional tribute to Lou Gehrig, who hit four homers in one game 85 years ago to the day.

Despite being 6-4 in its last 10 games, New York still holds a commanding lead in the AL East. New York sits atop the division, three games up on the Orioles. The Yankees’ 32-21 record is baseball’s fourth best; as is their +71 run differential.
