Day 8 of the 2017 French Open has come to a close. Let’s take a look at how the women’s singles tournament bracket is shaking out on Sunday, June 4.

Sunday, June 4 was a crazy day in the women’s singles tournament of the 2017 French Open at Stade Roland Garros in Paris. Of the five matches in the tournament played on Sunday, five resulted in the higher seeds falling.

While No. 2 Karolina Pliskova prevailed over Carina Witthoeft in straight sets, 7-5, 6-1, two of the biggest names left in the tournament went down on Sunday on clay: No. 4 Garbine Muguruza and No. 10 Venus Williams.

Muguruza won her first major on clay last year in the 2016 French Open. With top seed Angelique Kerber losing in the opening round, Muguruza looked poised to win her second straight tournament at Roland Garros. However, she would be upset by No. 13 Kristina Mladenovic in three sets, 6-1, 3-6, 6-3. There will be a new champion in the women’s singles tournament at Roland Garros.

While her younger sister Serena Williams is out for the rest of the season due to pregnancy, the elder of the two Williams sisters was cruising in the early stages of the 2017 French Open. However, Williams would fall to No. 30 Timea Bacsinszky in three sets, 5-7, 6-2, 6-1.

Here is how the rest of the women’s singles tournament shook out on Sunday at Roland Garros.
