Jason Heyward defies the odds and makes an incredible sliding catch Sunday night against the Cardinals.

Jason Heyward reminded everyone Sunday night why he’s been named a Gold Glover four times in his career. St. Louis Cardinals first baseman Matt Carpenter hit a hard line-drive to right field that looked to be a base hit, but Heyward didn’t like that idea.

Heyward quickly tracked the ball down, and made an incredible diving effort while landing on his side to keep Carpenter off base.

Ridiculous catches like these have almost become routine for the gold glover, but we still have to sit back and admire them as they occur. Especially since the Cubs and Cardinals have an historic rivalry between them, and Heyward has been on both sides of it.

Heyward played for the Cardinals during the 2015-16 season, but has been with the Cubs since then. He struggled mightily in his first season with the defending champs, as he only hit for a .230 average, with a career low seven home runs.

Heyward has proven to be a much better hitter than that over the course of his career, and has fared better so far this season. Coming into Sunday night’s game, Heyward has hit for a .259 average, and five home runs. Fortunately for Heyward, his superb defense keeps him in the lineup even when he is struggling on the offensive side of things.

The Cubs will need Heyward to keep contributing on offense, as they have had a bit of a World Series hangover this season with a 27-27 record. They trail the NL Central leading Brewers by 1.5 games, and the Cardinals aren’t too far behind either. With a lot of baseball still left to go this season, most impact the Cubs to figure things out sooner rather than later.
