Max Holloway beat Jose Aldo in his home country to become the UFC featherweight champion, and Twitter was full of great reactions.

Without a real superstar, UFC has been down in 2017. While there have been some good moments, none of the cards have been great from top to bottom, nor have they had the same star power as a UFC 205 or 207 from last year.

UFC 212 in Brazil was no different, but Max Holloway vs. Jose Aldo was one of the best fights they could make. It may have felt odd at first that a featherweight unification bout was being contested by two fighters who have both lost to the real champion, Conor McGregor. But as long as McGregor’s chasing down Floyd Mayweather and holding the lightweight belt, he doesn’t plan on coming back down to 145 any time soon.

Here’s what Twitter had to say after that stunning win:

There’s a very good chance that Holloway looked up to BJ Penn from a young age. He probably never would’ve dreamed he’d become a UFC champion back then, but here we are. If they market him well enough, he’ll be headlining a show in Hawaii in no time.

Despite these two losses to Holloway and McGregor, Aldo is still an all-time great. He helped bring the featherweight division to the UFC, and has provided them with some of their most unforgettable moments. This may have felt like an effective passing of the torch moment, but it’s hard to imagine he won’t be back soon.

But even McGregor had to be impressed by Holloway’s performance. Sure, he beat Aldo too, but he didn’t do it in Brazil. And with this win, Holloway is now riding an 11-fight win streak since his loss to McGregor back in 2013. If this performance doesn’t bring Conor back down to 145, Holloway has the makings of a dominant champion.
