1. Toronto Maple Leafs

The Toronto Maple Leafs have a very promising future. Their rebuild is over, having assembled a young and talented roster. Led by a trio of rookies in Auston Matthews, William Nylander and Mitch Marner, Toronto is set to be good for a while. However, with their rebuild over, it’s time for them to address the pink elephant in the room – their defense.

Toronto allowed the third most shots against per 60 minutes at even strength during the 2016-17 season. A big reason for this is Morgan Rielly hasn’t found a right handed defenseman to play next to. Tanev would be a great fit. His style might not be a perfect fit for Toronto’s up-tempo offense, but they need someone who can handle big minutes. Tanev is a solid enough fit that he’ll make it work.

What makes them the favorites to get him is their prospect depth. Not only do they have a fairly high 2017 first round pick, the Maple Leafs also have a number of forward prospects. Kasperi Kapanen, Jeremy Bracco and Kasperi Kapanen could all make sense. Paired with the first rounder, one of those players could help the Maple Leafs address their lone major weakness.
