49ers sign Elvis Dumervil
The San Francisco 49ers add Elvis Dumervil to a defense that was in need of a veteran presence.
The San Francisco 49ers have added some young talent on the defensive side of the ball like Solomon Thomas and Reuben Foster this offseason.
All they were missing was a veteran presence to help the growth of these young players.
Elvis Dumervil, 33, will play that role after signing with the 49ers on a two-year deal. He has accumulated 99 sacks in over 11 seasons with the Denver Broncos and Baltimore Ravens.
Dumervil was cut by the Ravens this past March for cap saving reasons. He was only able to tally eight games last season due to a foot injury.
Not too much should be expected of Dumervil production wise at this point of his career. He’s only racked up 9 sacks in the past two seasons.
For a pass rusher coming off an injury plagued season at his age, all that should matter is how he mentors the young players.
DeForest Buckner will benefit from this signing. He comes off an impressive rookie season tallying six sacks. The player that should benefit most is Arik Armstead who has been a bust so far. Aid from a veteran like Dumervil should help him by even the slightest bit. Armstead was sidelined by a shoulder injury that kept him out of the majority of last season.

The 49ers have shown some promise this off-season while under the helm of general manager John Lynch. This franchise was on a downward spiral and it looked like they were going to be on a long hiatus. Lynch has so far proven to be capable at constructing a team.
The Dumervil signing proves once again of his capability. He has young players on the defense and goes out to sign a veteran. This a move that a general manager in every sport has utilized.
While the 49ers still have numerous holes to fill, they all can’t be currently addressed. The development of their young talent is what all of our eyes should be on for this upcoming season.
