The middleweight boxing match between Gennady Golovkin vs. Canelo Alvarez finally has a home

The highly anticipated boxing match between Gennady Golovkin vs. Canelo Alvarez will be held at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

CEO of Golden Boy Promotions Oscar De La Hoya broke the news Monday during an appearance on SportsCenter.

“Keep in mind everybody wanted this fights,” said De La Hoya. “But I nailed it down. It’s the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. Everybody wants to go to Vegas, have a good time and watch great fights with GGG and Canelo. It’s going to be a train wreck, let me tell you.”

The bout, which will be the unified WBA, WBC, IBF, The Ring and lineal middleweight championship of the world, was announced initially announced following Canelo’s decision win over Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. in May.

But while the date was set, a venue had yet to be named. Originally, Dodgers Stadium in Los Angeles emerged as the leading candidate for the match, much to the surprise of everyone who assumed the promotion would target Madison Square Garden of AT&T Stadium.

“I actually did receive a crazy amount of money,” said De La Hoya. “The offers were amazing from Madison Square Garden. So I was contemplating it … then obviously my good friend [Cowboys owner] Jerry Jones wanted this fight. I talked to my great friend [president of basketball operations for the Los Angeles Lakers] Magic Johnson and he wanted to stage the fight in Dodgers Stadium.

“But ultimately with the entertainment factor, people want to go to parties after the fight and you want to stage the pre-fight parties. I’m going to open about 12 or 15 venues in Las Vegas to watch this fights amongst friends and other fans of the sport. We’re going to open up 35,000 seats so people can go to Vegas and have a great time and watch a great fight.”

In terms of actual competition, his dominant win over Chavez Jr. pushed Alvarez’s (49-1-1, 34 KOs) win streak to seven straight, which includes a decision win over Miguel Cotto and a sixth-round knockout of Amir Khan.

Golovkin (37-0, 33 KOs) is coming off a decision win, the first of his career, over Daniel Jacobs earlier this year, retaining his title WBA, WBC, IBF and IBO belts and adding Jacobs’ WBA regular belt in the process.
