Rain was the storyline at Roland Garros on Tuesday, June 6. Here is what went down during the women’s singles quarterfinals of the 2017 French Open.
The women’s singles tournament of the 2017 French Open has been all sorts of crazy. There have been so many upsets, it’s been close to impossible to predict what could happen. Both of the higher seeds were knocked off during the women’s singles quarterfinals on Tuesday, June 6 at Stade Roland Garros in Paris.
There was also a good bit of rain getting in the way of play on Tuesday. It pushed back the first part of the men’s singles quarterfinals until Wednesday. The two women’s singles matches were delayed twice before reaching completion.
Jelena Ostapenko was able to defeat No. 11 Caroline Wozniacki in three sets, 4-6, 6-2, 6-2. Wozniacki emerged as a serious candidate to win her first French Open after a great match on Sunday. Perhaps the rain allowed Ostapenko to overcome a loss in the first set to win the last two to advance to the semifinals.
Awaiting Ostapenko in the women’s singles semifinals will be No. 30 Timea Bacsinszky. She upset No. 12 Kristina Mladenovic in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4. Mladenovic had been playing well on her side of the bracket, but Bacsinszky seems to have caught fire in her last two matches.
Here is how the women’s singles tournament shook out at Roland Garros on Tuesday, June 6.

With No. 30 Bacsinszky facing Ostapenko in the semifinals, that means one of the tournament’s upset specialists will be playing for her first French Open championship. While the other side of the bracket features strong players like No. 2 Karolinz Pliskova and No. 3 Simona Halep, when has playing a higher seed stopped Bacsinszky or Ostpenko on clay this June?
