Texas A&M holds off Davidson in a Super Regional of the 2017 College World Series, thanks to a walk-off single by 3B George Janca.

Coming into College Station for a Super Regional series against Texas A&M had the Davidson Wildcats concerned. Alongside Wake Forest, Davidson has been one of the Cinderella stories heading into the 2017 Super Regionals, so there’s been a lot of pressure on the program to come out alive this weekend. As a host, Texas A&M wanted to quiet that momentum and they did so, following a 15-inning game, good enough for a 1-0 series lead over Davidson.

Texas A&M showed some promise during the first six innings, providing themselves with some cushioning as they led 6-0 after the fifth. Thanks to a three-RBI performance by Davidson CF Cam Johnson, Davidson would rise from the ashes, tacking on six of their own runs during the innings that followed. After six scoreless innings, Texas A&M 3B George Janca gave the Aggies bench a sigh of relief in the 15th inning.

Initially, the North Carolina Tar Heels were the heavy favorites to advance and oppose Texas A&M. Unfortunately, Davidson spoiled their chances of any type of tournament hope, tallying that series 10 total runs to UNC’s six. Now that Davidson has embarrassed UNC in Chapel Hill, it’s likely that they still have that sort of mentality as they ride into battle for a three-game series on Texas A&M’s campus.

Janca’s only hit of the day would prove to be a turning point for Texas A&M. He was also helped out by Texas A&M P Mitchell Kilkenny, who fanned nine batters as he stood on the mound for over five innings. Overall, the Aggies scored seven runs on 18 hits, nine of which were produced by the top of the batting order.

After over five hours of game time, the Texas A&M Aggies can rest before Game 2, of which will be played tomorrow, June 10, at 6:00 PM ET. And, if necessary, Game 3 between Texas A&M and Davidson will be scheduled on Sunday at the same time.
