Striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s stay at Old Trafford cut short due to knee injury.

After less than one full season, Zlatan Ibrahimovic has been released by Manchester United. The two sides have no agreement to extend Ibrahimovic’s contract, which expires this month. In addition, Ibrahimovic is recovering from a brutal knee injury suffered late in the season. The injury will sideline him until 2018 and plays a major role in his release.

Ibrahimovic led the Red Devils in goals during his reign with 28 in all competitions. The Swede showed that despite his age, he can still play. Ibrahimovic was among the Premier League’s top scorers this season.

The 35-year old has not made comments regarding his future. He has expressed his desire to play in the United States in the past. A move to the MLS might have to wait a few more years, however, as Ibrahimovic will likely become subject to offers from the Chinese Super League. Chinese clubs are dishing out big money offers to some of the world’s brightest stars. The MLS or CSL seems likely, especially now that Ibrahimovic is eligible for a free transfer. But, don’t rule out a European stay. Ibrahimovic’s talent is still top tier.

For Manchester United, the Ibrahimovic incident likely proves earlier rumors true. The Telegraph reports that Real Madrid’s Alvaro Morata has agreed to a move to Old Trafford. United currently have youngsters Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial up front, it would benefit from signing an experienced player such as Morata.

A move for Morata would also assist United in securing a move for Real’s James Rodriguez. Mourinho has been trying to lure Rodriguez away since his time as manager at Chelsea.
