Latvia’s Jelena Ostapenko defeated Romania’s Simona Halep to win the 2017 French Open in the women’s singles tournament at Stade Roland Garros on Saturday.

With Serena Williams out for the rest of the tennis season due to her pregnancy, the women’s tennis circuit is looking for a new star. The first tournament without Williams has been the 2017 French Open. The women’s singles tournament at Stade Roland Garros was chock full of upsets, but we now have two new stars in women’s tennis.

In the women’s singles finals, Latvia’s Jelena Ostapenko defeated Romania’s Simona Halep in three sets to win her first major championship. This was the first singles final either player had taken part in. While Halep had a marvelous ride to the finals, she couldn’t prevent the upset specialist Ostapenko from winning the final two sets.

Halep was the No. 3 player in this tournament, knocking off everybody in her way. She was the favorite in all but one match at Roland Garros. When she defeated No. 2 Karolina Pliskova in the semifinals on Thursday, it seemed increasingly likely that Halep would win her first major title.

However, she had not got her taste of Ostapenko yet. The 20-year-old Latvian tennis phenom was clearly the story at Roland Garros the last two weeks. She came out of nowhere to win her first singles tennis major. Women’s tennis has needed a new star as Williams won’t be playing at an elite level forever. Could Ostapenko be that player?

Sunday will feature the men’s singles tournament finals and it should be a dandy. It will be between the No. 3 Stan Wawrinka and No. 4 Rafael Nadal. Wawrinka is seeking his second French Open title and his fourth major championship. Nadal has won 14 majors already, including a ridiculous nine at Roland Garros on clay.
