Rafael Nadal beat Stan Wawrinka in the 2017 French Open finals to win his 10th title at the Grand Slam tournament in France.

The 2017 French Open has come to a close. As expected, Rafael Nadal has once again emerged victorious in France. Stan Wawrinka put forward a very solid effort in defeat, but was simply not able to match the king of the clay. Nadal beat the challenger from Switzerland 6-2, 6-3, 4-1. This match was much closer than the score suggests, as Wawrinka did a very good job keeping up with the best clay court player of all time.

However, Nadal was able to snuff out any hint of momentum the challenger got. With this win, the Spaniard now has 10 career French Open titles, the most of any player in the Open era. His 10 titles in France are also the most of any player, man or woman, at any Grand Slam tournament. Wawrinka was denied his second French Open title after winning the tournament in 2015.

Wawrinka was the third ranked player entering the tournament while Nadal was fourth. The two might swap positions in the updated rankings. Nadal has cemented himself as the greatest player in the history of the lone clay court Grand Slam title. His dominance on clay is nothing short of incredible. Consider how many great players have been destroyed by the clay court. Meanwhile, Nadal dominates on it.

This win puts Rafael past Pete Sampras in the career Grand Slams category with 15. He trails only Roger Federer who has 18. Wawrinka falls to Nadal, giving him a 3-16 career record against him. With Federer injured and Djokovic and Murray struggling a little bit, one could argue Nadal is the best player in the world right now. Hopefully, the best rivalry in the world will take place at Wimbledon. Federer and Nadal haven’t squared off there since 2009, when Federer won arguably the best match of all time.
