The Pittsburgh Penguins have repeated as Stanley Cup champions thanks to Patric Hornqvist’s game winning goal in Game 6.

The impossible has happened. Even without Kris Letang, the Pittsburgh Penguins have repeated as Stanley Cup champions. The odds were definitely against them with all of their injuries. However, for the third time in Sidney Crosby’s career, he’s a Stanley Cup champion. The Penguins have Patric Hornqvist to thank this time around. He scored with just over a minute left in Game 6 and his late tally wound up being the game winner.

This goal was challenged by the Nashville Predators for goaltender interference. They didn’t really have any to lose by doing so, especially at this point in the game. However, the goal stood despite a tiny bit of contact between Hornqvist and Pekka Rinne. It’s impressive that the Penguins won back to back titles, especially with all of their injuries. Many counted them out after Letang’s injury.

Pittsburgh won their fourth Stanley Cup title thanks to a true team effort. Just about everyone contributed at some point during their Stanley Cup run. Marc-Andre Fleury had a heck of a swan song in Pittsburgh. Originally the backup goalie, he was forced into the starting goaltender role after Matt Murray got injured before the first game of the playoffs. Fleury helped them beat the Columbus Blue Jackets and Washington Capitals.

Murray contributed by helping them beat both the Ottawa Senators and Predators. He becomes the first goaltender to start his career with two Stanley Cup titles while still being a rookie in both postseasons. Mike Sullivan has won a Stanley Cup in his first two seasons as the Penguins head coach. The Penguins overcame a lot to repeat as champions. They are the first team to do so since the Detroit Red Wings.
