MLB mock draft: Hunter Greene draws intrigue
By John McCarty
With the MLB Draft beginning today, we turn our attention to the Minnesota Twins, Hunter Greene and ample other youngsters.
Something to keep an eye on and unique to the the MLB Draft is the team budget and slot value of a draft pick. Teams will, on occasion, use a top pick on a player they can sign ‘below’ slot money, and use the difference to aggressively sign expensive or high bonus demand players later in the draft. Last year, the Atlanta Braves used the third overall selection on Ian Anderson, a mid first round rated high school pitcher, and the savings from his below slot signing allowed the Braves to sign high school left hander Joey Wentz.
Based on projections, while the order may change, there is a sense is the top five players are set. The real interesting part of the draft could start at the sixth spot with Oakland, who can go in a number of directions.
1. Minnesota Twins
2016 Record: 59-103
Selection: Kyle Wright, RHP, Vanderbilt
Signing Bonus: $7,770,700
In this scenario, Minnesota chooses the best mix of potential and security at the top of the draft, possessing what Keith Law describes as possibly the best combination of ceiling and floor in the draft. Minnesota has been linked and often linked to Louisville multi-position prospect Brendan McKay. However, as the draft nears, Wright appears to be gaining momentum with Minnesota at the top spot.
The right handed Wright mixes an improving assortment of off speed pitches to compliment a mid 90’s fastball. An inconsistent start to his junior season has given way to strong outings recently, has has yielded only six runs in his last 46 innings. He displays solid, repeatable mechanics from the right side.
Wright needs to improve consistency, especially with his secondary, off speed offerings. Depending on the day determines what his best pitch is.
Wright is a pitcher that projects to likely move quickly through the minor leagues assuming he’s able to stay injury free. He he may project as a true ‘number one’ rotation starter, but likely provides quality pitching, and if all goes right, do it quickly.
Minnesota has begun to see their young players perform up to expectations, so in this scenario, the hope is that Wright is able to move quickly and be a part of a playoff contending staff, possibly as early as the 2019 season.
