In a move that no one was expecting, Sony breathes new high-definition life into an old fan favorite.

Sony gave both the gaming industry and the gaming community a look at what games it can expect on the horizon during their E3 2017 presentation on Monday night.

As expected, Sony showed off new games like Days Gone along with continuations of popular franchises like God of War, Uncharted: The Lost Legacy, and of course, Call of Duty: WWII.

What the audience didn’t expect was the announcement of a stunning remake of Shadow of the Colossus, an action-adventure video game created by the legendary Fumito Ueda.

Sony unveiled the news with an absolutely stunning trailer of what the game will look like.

Ueda was most recently in the spotlight with the release of The Last Guardian, a game that was heralded as a spiritual successor to Shadow of the Colossus. Fans of Ueda’s work, however, still hold Ico and Shadow of the Colossus to be some of his best work.

First released in 2005 for PlayStation 2, the game’s popularity spurred a 2011 remake for the PlayStation 3. Clearly, however, just one remake is not enough for a game of such high regard. And from the graphics in the trailer, the PlayStation 4 iteration will be just delightful, giving those who have already played a reason to play again and gracing those who have not with the chance to experience its excellence.

In Shadow of the Colossus, you play as a man named Wander who takes on the burden of destroying massive beings called the colossi in an attempt to resurrect a young girl.

Sony did not announce an exact release date for the remake, except to say that it will arrive in 2018.
