The Nashville Predators have set their sights on the future ahead, after losing in the Stanley Cup Finals. They have started by re-signing depth defenseman Yannick Weber to a one-year contract.

The Nashville Predators have re-signed depth defenseman Yannick Weber to a one-year contract Tuesday. Weber will earn $650,000 next year from the one-year contract with Nashville, and will be hoping to see as much playing time in Nashville as he did last season.

Weber, 28, played in 73 games with the Predators last season, the highest single-season total of his career to date. During those 73 games Weber had one goal and seven assists on the bottom pairing for Nashville. He also had 25 penalty minutes, showing his ability to stay out of the sin bin.

Before coming to The Music City, Weber plied his trades with the Vancouver Canucks for three seasons, playing in 159 games. During that time he scored 17 goals, including 11 in 2014-15, and had 21 assists. Weber also played for the Montreal Canadiens, playing in 115 games for the Habs. During his 115-game stay in Montreal, Weber had five goals and 27 assists. Weber has also played in 155 AHL games for the Hamilton Bulldogs and the Utica Comets, scoring 33 goals and adding 62 assists during his time in the minors.

Weber had the worst Corsi-For percentage of the six Nasvhille defenseman that played in over half the season, sporting a 47.96 CF%. Compare this to the second-worst, Ryan Ellis, who had a 49.80 CF% during the 2016-17 season. Despite the poor Corsi-For percentage last season, Weber is still a serviceable third pairing, or seventh, defenseman when taking into account he is only going to cost $650,000 for the season.

With the approximately $16.5 million in cap space that the Predators are currently sporting, there is plenty of room to pursue another defenseman in the upcoming free agency period to help with defensive depth if Weber doesn’t prove to be a top six defenseman again.
