4. Steve Spurrier

We’ve finally gotten to the one and only head ball coach Steve Spurrier. Not only did he win a Heisman Trophy quarterbacking the Florida Gators in 1964, he is also the most distinguished football coach in Florida history. Let’s not forget that he too is the winningest head coach for the South Carolina Gamecocks.

Spurrier epitomized excellence on the gridiron in the 1990s for the Gators. From 1990 to 2001, Spurrier went 122-27-1 at Florida, going 87-12 in SEC play. His 1996 Gators would win the national title thanks to a great year from Heisman Trophy winner in quarterback Danny Wuerffel. Spurrier would be the first, and to date only, former Heisman winner to coach a Heisman winner.

Before leaving for the NFL’s Washington Redskins in 2002, Spurrier won six SEC Championships and seven SEC East crowns, going 6-5 in bowl games. His stay in the NFL was only temporary, as he would re-invent himself at South Carolina.

Joining South Carolina in 2005, Spurrier would go 86-49 (44-40) as the Gamecocks’ head ball coach, winning the 2010 SEC East crown and going 5-4 in bowl games. Not counting what he did in the ACC at Duke, Spurrier went a combined 208-76 (131-52) as an SEC head coach, winning eight division titles, going 11-9 in bowls in additionĀ to his championships while at Florida.
