Where did Rory McIlroy finish on the opening round leaderboard at Erin Hills for the 2017 U.S. Open?

Rory McIlroy picked a heck of a time to come back into the fold on the PGA Tour this weekend at Erin Hills in Wisconsin for the 117th U.S. Open Championship.

The winner of America’s championship in 2011, McIlroy had missed the previous five weeks of action on tour with a nagging rib injury, but one of the world’s best players was back and ready to go in Wisconsin.

McIlroy got off to a fantastic start on the front with a par on the par-5 1st hole and then followed that up with an eagle on the par-2 2nd to sit at -2 after the first pair of holes. But a bogey followed that eagle up on the 3rd and then one more bogey at the par-4 8th had McIlroy making the turn at even par (36).

Unfortunately for McIlroy, that’s where things took a turn in a bad way. The rust began to show on the back nine on Thursday. On the back, McIlroy bogeyed three times, including an ugly-looking double bogey on the par-4 15th and then another one on the 17th. He finished up the round shooting a +6 (78) on the day, 13 shots off Rickie Fowler’s lead at -7 overall after the first day.

Here’s how McIlroy fared against the top names on the leaderboard.

2017 U.S. Open leaderboard after 18 holes:

1. Rickie Fowler: -7 (65)

T-2. Paul Casey: -6 (66)

T-2. Xander Schauffele: -6 (66)

T-7. Marc Leishman: -4 (68)
