Round 1 is in the books at Erin Hills for the 2017 U.S. Open. Let’s take a look at the top of the leaderboard after the first 18 holes of play.

The 2017 U.S. Open at Erin Hills kicked off with the course playing longer than any course in major tournament history at 7,845 yards.

Someone forgot to tell Rickie Fowler how challenging this was supposed to be.

The former winner of The PLAYERS Championship stormed out of the gate with a -7 (65) to sit atop the board at Erin Hills. Fowler was hot and stayed hot with -4 (32) on the front nine (while starting on the back) and didn’t record a bogey in a round for the ninth time this season, which leads the PGA Tour. The 65 from Fowler tied the lowest round ever shot during an opening round at the U.S. Open.

Behind Fowler were fellow Americans Brooks Koepka, Patrick Reed and J.B. Holmes, who shot -5 (67), -4 (68) and -3 (69) respectively. 2017 Masters winner Sergio Garcia shot a -2 (70) in his first round at a major since winning the green jacket in April. Others, like former major winners Jordan Spieth (+1, 73) and Jason Day (+7, 79) struggled in the first 18 holes this weekend.

The day did bring a few surprises, like Ernie Els shooting a -2 (70) in his first round on Thursday and Jon Rahm coming in with a +4 (76) after the Spaniard’s rise of play in recent months.

With day one in the books at Erin Hills, let’s take an extended look at the U.S. Open leaderboard after the opening round.
