 5. Trevor Cahill

The Red Sox may be reluctant to deal with the San Diego Padres again this year after coming out on the wrong side of the Drew Pomeranz trade. Padres GM A.J. Preller came under intense scrutiny last year for hiding player injuries when making trades. Pomeranz was one of the pitchers whose medical records were fudged.

Boston and San Diego were also partners in the Craig Kimbrel trade, which has worked out wonderfully for both sides. The front offices are familiar with each other’s assets, and that does matter in the MLB trade marketplace. Trevor Cahill is the most attractive trade piece the Padres have to offer this year.

Cahill was an All-Star for the Oakland A’s in 2012 and won 18 games. He was eventually forced to the bullpen after going 3-12 with a 5.61 ERA in 2014. Cahill became a valuable left-handed member of the Chicago Cubs relief core and appeared in six games in the 2015 postseason.

The Padres offered Cahill a chance to re-reinvent himself as a starter this year, and the results have been positive to date. The 29-year-old has been forced to the disabled list with a strained shoulder after making seven starts with a 3.27 ERA, but is expected to return by the end of June. Cahill had been striking out 11.1 per nine before his injury. If he pitches well after returning from the disabled list, contenders will line up to bid for his services.
