Take a look back at Jordan Spieth’s second round of the 2017 U.S. Open on Friday afternoon at Erin Hills in Wisconsin.
Jordan Spieth played much better in his second round of the 2017 U.S. Open on Friday at Erin Hills, but he still has a lot of work to do if he his to capture a third career major tournament title.
The 2015 U.S. Open champion’s second round started off on a high note with a terrific approach shot and eight-foot birdie putt on the par-4 1st to move back to even. Another birdie followed with an 11-foot putt on the 4th, as Spieth was able to at least separate himself from the cut line for the time being.
Spieth ran into trouble for the first time during his second round on 6 by missing a 10-foot par putt to drop down to -1. The world’s No. 5 golfer was quickly able to bounce back with a birdie on the par-5 7th thanks to an outstanding chip that left him eight feet from the hole.
Just like in Thursday’s opening round, Spieth was strong off the tee, but he left a few birdies on the course with missed putts later in the evening. Spieth finished his second round opening nine at -1 following two straight pars, good enough for 34th place.
While Spieth remained steady on the second nine, a series of five consecutive pars wasn’t enough to make up further ground. The par-4 15th caused some trouble, as Spieth missed a short putt to bogey and move back to even, putting some pressure on to make the cut line.
Fortunately, Spieth saved par on the remaining two holes to finish the second round with a 71, tying him for 43rd place at even overall. Despite Rickie Fowler’s stumble on Friday, Spieth trails the lead group by seven shots and will need to be much better with his putter over the weekend to have any shot.

Spieth’s tee time for Saturday’s third round will be announced following the completion of the day’s action. While a victory is going to take a tremendous effort, Spieth has at least recovered from his tough outing at the 2017 Masters back in April.
