After shooting a +6 (78) in Round 1, how did Rory McIlroy fare in the second round at Erin Hills for the 2017 U.S. Open?

Before returning to action at Erin Hills for the 117th U.S. Open Championship in Wisconsin, Rory McIlroy had some things to say about the 7,800+ yard course. Unfortunately for McIlroy, his game didn’t back up his talking, and he’ll be enjoying a short weekend away from the course.

McIlroy shot a +6 (78) out of the gate on Thursday at Erin Hills in his first round in over five weeks due to a rib injury that just wouldn’t stop bugging him. Things didn’t get better for McIlroy, as he had to fight to shoot an even-par 72 on cut day, which had him well below the projected cut line early in the day.

Starting on the back, McIlroy dropped a shot on the par-4 12th hole and then answered right back with a birdie on the par-3 13th to get back to +6 overall and even for the day. He made the turn at par on the round, but then bogeyed the 1st, 2nd and 3rd to sit at +9 overall with just six holes potentially left in his weekend.

The former U.S. Open champion in 2011 birded three of the final six holes (4, 7 and 9) to get back to +6 overall, but it wasn’t enough for him to play into the weekend up in Wisconsin in his first tournament back from injury.

Here’s what the top of the leaderboard looked like in front of McIlroy, including what the cut line was that he missed on Friday at Erin Hills.
