Confederations Cup hosts Russia take on New Zealand Saturday in the opening match of the tournament. This is the first meeting on the international stage between the two countries. Russia have the stronger roster and form despite not being able to progress further than the group stage of a major tournament since Euro 2008.

The Russian side are relatively young, only bringing nine players from the squad that competed in Euro 2016. The defense and midfield are their biggest strengths in the tournament. They’re facing a New Zealand side that’s been goalless in their last two games. In the last year Russia have kept Ghana, Turkey and Romania from scoring against them.

New Zealand have lost their last two games 1-0, to Northern Ireland and Belarus. Chris Wood, who scored 27 goals for Championship side Leeds last season, will need a monster tournament for New Zealand to take any points in their group, let alone advance.
