The Cleveland Cavaliers are going to look at Chauncey Billups for an executive role, after it was reported David Griffin will not come back as the GM.

What a day to be a fan of the Cleveland Cavaliers. You’re basically being put through the ringer right now. First it was a report involving a trade for Paul George. Then it was a report of a trade for Jimmy Butler. Then it was a report that GM David Griffin will be let go.

Now it’s being added that the Cavaliers are looking at Chauncey Billups as a potential candidate to replace Griffin. The important thing to note from The Vertical’s Adrian Wojnarowski is that Billups will come in as a President of Basketball Operations, not necessarily the general manager.

It seems as if the issue between David Griffin and owner Dan Gilbert ran deep, because Griffin has been excellent for the Cleveland Cavaliers. Griffin has re-shaped this roster in numerous ways, adding piece after piece to help LeBron and the Cavaliers bring home a championship.

It’s being added that Griffin’s vision for the team didn’t necessarily match what the Cavaliers were looking for and so he took himself out from consideration.

Billups, on the other hand, has some experience during his playing days with Tyronn Lue. He also has a relationship with Dan Gilbert, because both are Detroit-based.

The former Pistons’ star is currently an analyst for ESPN on the NBA Countdown and is being strongly considered to be a part of the Cavs’ front office. This is a huge move that will likely shape the future of Cleveland basketball. Nobody will know for certain what Griffin had in mind, but Gilbert didn’t see eye-to-eye and now Griffin’s gone. The long-term impacts of this move remain to be seen, but it could influence what LeBron and the rest of the crew do in free agency next summer.
