The Cleveland Cavaliers are in search of their new General Manager, after not extending David Griffin’s contract. They start with Chauncey Billups.

The Cleveland Cavaliers are beginning their search for a general manager in the worst possible time. The NBA Draft is on Thursday and there are numerous trade rumors floating around, and the Cavaliers don’t necessarily have anyone answering the phones.

The first name that popped up in reports for the Cavs’ GM opening was Chauncey Billups, who has worked with Gilbert before due to their ties from Detroit.

Now, ESPN’s Dave McMenamin, who covers the Cleveland Cavaliers, is reporting that Dan Gilbert met with Billups regarding their GM opening on Tuesday.

Some had wondered if Billups would come in and be the general manager immediately, or will he become the President of Basketball Operations? It seems as if the latter is more likely, per reports from Monday, with Billups hiring someone under him to run the day-to-day operations.

It’ll be interesting to watch what Billups, if hired, thinks of the current construction of the roster and how he wants to improve the Cavaliers from day one. There have been numerous reports that the Cavaliers are looking to add Paul George or Jimmy Butler, by giving up Kevin Love in the process.

The first step for Dan Gilbert is to hire an executive to run the basketball operations. The Cavaliers let go of David Griffin after he was with the team for the past three years and led them to three-straight NBA Finals.
