Golden Knights getting Marc-Andre Fleury and pick from Penguins
Things are starting together for the Vegas Golden Knights, as they reportedly are going to add Marc-Andre Fleury to their roster along with a draft pick.
The Vegas Golden Knights finally have jerseys, are picking up players, and are starting to look like a real NHL team. Now, they look like they’ve found someone in net, as they’ll reportedly pick Marc-Andre Fleury in the expansion draft.
Rumors had been swirling for weeks about Fleury making his way to Las Vegas, as he waived his no-movement clause in his contract with the Pittsburgh Penguins looking to commit to Matt Murray full-time in net.
The move would instantly give the Golden Knights success in net, as they gain a goaltender who has been a part of three Stanley Cup runs with the Penguins, including two straight in the last two seasons.
According to a report from Pierre LeBrun, Fleury won’t be the only thing making its way to Vegas, as the Golden Knights will also get a draft pick from the Penguins as incentive to pick up Fleury.
The move allows the Penguins some extra cap relief, as they sacrifice a draft pick in order to avoid Fleury’s contract on their payroll long-term. Fleury’s contract still has two years left that would cost $5.75 million to the team’s cap, and the Penguins needed to sweeten the pot to make sure they could lessen their cap hit.

Fleury ended up becoming a big piece of the Penguins’ recent Stanley Cup run, as the team had to deal with an injury to Murray in net that could’ve been a fatal blow. Fleury was back on the bench for the Stanley Cup Final, but his impact was still important nonetheless.
Now, Fleury should have the chance to start in goal for the Golden Knights, and provides serious experience from his long career to a team just getting its start.
