The Atlanta Hawks shipped out starting center Dwight Howard earlier this week and while they’re bringing back Miles Plumlee and the remaining three years on his contract, finding a center for the future could well be high on the Hawks’ priority list. The best remaining center on the board is Texas’s Jarrett Allen.
The 6-foot-11 big man has a 7-foot-5 wingspan and excellent size to play the center spot in the NBA, but he needs to work on translating that size into better statistics on the floor. Allen was a decent, but not elite rebounder and he only averaged 1.9 blocks per 40 minutes as a freshman. However, team context also played a role. Allen regularly shared the floor with another big man and spent quite a bit of time away from the basket. That did allow him to show off some ability to defend in space that could be valuable in pick-and-roll defense at the next level.
On the offensive end, the big key to Allen’s game will be his pick-and-roll offense. He’s solid attacking as a dive man and can finish comfortably above the rim. He still needs to develop the other aspects of his game, including his post up moves and jump shot.
