Kansas City Chiefs and general manager John Dorsey agree to go separate ways

On the same day the Chiefs announced a contract extension for head coach Andy Reid, the Chiefs followed up an announcement the organization and general manager John Dorsey agreed go separate ways.

Hired in 2013 from the Green Bay Packers, Dorsey oversaw the rebuilding of the Chiefs organization alongside Andy Reid, whom had also been hired in 2013 after being let go by the Philadelphia Eagles. The timing could be considered unusual in that the Chiefs gave Reid a four-year contract extension on the same day the announcement Dorsey and the organization were parting ways.

Michael David Smith reported through Pro Football Talk that owner Clark Hunt informed Dorsey his contract would not be extended past the upcoming 2017 season. Dorsey along with Reid were brought in after previous GM Scott Pioli and head coach Romeo Crennel were let go after a 2012 season that saw them finish with the leagues worst record, going 2-14.

Both Dorsey along with Reid were hired with the intent of a new power alignment at the top of the organization. Both Dorsey and Reid were to report to the owner, as opposed to the previous set up of the head coach reporting to the GM who then would report to the owner.

"“I notified John that we would not be extending his contract beyond the 2017 season, and after consideration, we felt it was in his best interests and the best interests of the team to part ways now,”"

The Chiefs certainly have made news in the month of June. Earlier in the month, wide receiver Jeremy Maclin was let go in a sudden and somewhat surprising move, made more so by reports he was informed of his release via voicemail from Dorsey. And with today’s announcement that Dorsey would not be returning, the unusual time frame for the departure will raise questions that hopefully will be answered in coming days.
