Capitals re-sign T.J. Oshie to eight-year deal
Captain America looks like he’ll be staying in the nation’s capital for a long time, as T.J. Oshie was re-signed to the Capitals on an eight-year deal.
It’s only fitting that T.J. Oshie, who was an American hero in the 2014 Winter Olympics, would stick around in the nation’s capital for as long as he can, as he’s heading back to the Washington Capitals.
In a deal announced on Friday by Capitals senior vice president and general manager Brian MacLellan, the team re-signed the forward to an eight-year deal worth $46 million. MacLellan released a statement on the move, and gave some high praise for Oshie in the process.
"“T.J. is an invaluable member of our team and we felt it was imperative for us to re-sign him in a competitive free agent market,” MacLellan said in the statement. “T.J. is a highly competitive player with a tremendous skill set; he epitomizes the kind of player our team must have in order for us to continue to put ourselves in a position to compete in this League.”"
Oshie reacted to the move on Twitter, expressing his excitement to return to D.C. for the next eight years.
Oshie has spent the last two seasons with the Capitals after spending his first seven years in the league with the St. Louis Blues, and was a key part of the team’s success over the last couple years. He played 148 games for the Capitals over the two seasons, and scored 59 total goals along with 107 total points in that stretch.

The move comes amidst uncertainty regarding Capitals star Alexander Ovechkin, and the new deal shows the team’s commitment to the forward throughout whatever chaos ensues over the next few years. There were also rumors of Oshie heading to the Chicago Blackhawks while the Blackhawks were making big moves on Friday, so this can hopefully help calm some Caps fans down.
