Tennis great Serena Williams posed for the cover of Vanity Fair, exposing her pregnant belly.

Serena Williams may be out getting ready to have a baby and planning a wedding, but she knows how to stay in the headlines. In gorgeous photos by renowned photographer Annie Leibowitz, the tennis legend shows off her powerful, feminine shape and gushes details about her pregnancy, what it was like telling her fiancé, Reddit’s co-round Alexis Ohanian, and details on their romance.

The most fascinating bit in the article is her description of how she found out she was expecting, right before the Australian Open. Being pregnant is a major milestone, but imagine finding out while at the beginning of the tennis season and about to compete in the first Grand Slam of the year.

“Oh my God, this can’t be—I’ve got to play a tournament,” was Serena’s awesome response. “How am I going to play the Australian Open? I had planned on winning Wimbledon this year.”

It also explains why she went out so early at Aukland at the beginning of the year. The first symptoms of her condition occurred during that tournament.

The 23-time Grand Slam champion told Vanity Fair about throwing up and the hormonal changes she started going through at the time and how her friend urged her to take a pregnancy test. The cool factor? She took the pregnancy test during a model shoot, of course, because she’s, like, Serena Williams.

Even cooler, that she had the confidence to go ahead and enter the Melbourne Grand Slam anyway, and win her record 23rd Grand Slam.

The former world No. 1 also sweetly talks about preparing for Ohanian’s proposal.

“I knew it was coming,” she said of the proposal. “I was like, ‘Serena, you’re ready. This is what you want.’ ”

The front cover may be titillating, in what seems to be a favorite pregnancy image done before (Demi Moore), there are others inside, including my favorite, a Serena photo of the tennis legend in a flowing yellow dress that also accents her pregnant frame and offers a more angelic aura.

The Vanity Fair piece is a welcome change from McEnroe’s comments that the legend would be ranked like 700th in men’s tennis.

Mother-to-be, tennis legend, wife-to-be, savvy business woman. The interview in Vanity Fair just proves that Serena Williams keeps redefining awesome.
