Minnesota Timberwolves: Craig Kilborn

Kilborn used to host the late night show that nobody watched, until James Corden came along. It’s the second night slot on CBS, meaning it came after Letterman for years and years. Kilborn was an interesting host in that slot thanks in large part to his diverse interests. One of those was NBA basketball, and as a native Missourian, the Timberwolves became his team.

He was 2 Chainz before 2 Chainz, challenging members of the team to HORSE and various shooting contests. Apparently, Kilborn had Kevin Garnett to “R” in their game of HORSE, which is the score you get to before you look around and sheepishly make the “right where we want ‘em” joke to the people sitting near you. Kilborn had no chance of beating Garnett in HORSE. But would he have wanted to? Real fans don’t embarrass their stars.

Kilborn played NCAA basketball at Montana State and continued to stay in basketball shape thanks to one-on-one competition against comedian Garry Shandling. When Minnesota came knocking in 2004, Kilborn was ready. Heaven knows that during those KG years, the Wolves could have used all the depth they could muster. Maybe Kilborn would have been a contributor.

Not many Timberwolves headlines feature Kilborn these days. The former late night host has fallen away from the spotlight. But as Minnesota gears up for another push, we might see more of Kilborn soon. Towns, Thibs and Co. could use him when things get thick.
